Specialized ayurvedic remedies such as panchakarma, marma chikitsa, dhara or following an ayurvedic diet, basically endeavor to restore the harmony of the tridoshas. The purpose of all ayurvedic remedies and herbal medicines is to keep the doshas or the humors in equilibrium, since an imbalance indicates a disease condition. Samsodhana (cleansing process), samsamana (palliative measures) and nidanaparivarjana (treating the causes) are the three main stages through which ayurvedic remedies usually progress.

Of these three remedial phases, samsodhana is considered a prominent process and according to ayurveda, should be administered with full care. Panchakarma is synonymous with this process. In fact, panchakarma is a group of five ayurvedic remedies, all of which are not practiced in all diseases.

Ayurveda regimen for winter depression.

Long nights, short days, sweaters, warm clothes and chilly weather make many of us sick and depressed. This Depression which surfaces especially in winter is a Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and is often called as winter Time Blues or Winter depression. The exact cause for this depression is as of yet unclear. But yet few scientists believe lack of exposure to sunlight as the reason for this disorder.

The symptoms of winter depression are tendency to over eat, craving for carbohydrates and sweets and weight gain.


Had our ancestors observed this change in humans? The answer is yes. Have they recommended any remedies? Yes, they have recommended simple and effective natural remedies to overcome Seasonal Affective Disorder. They have laid down explicit guidelines about diet and lifestyles which have to be followed according to seasons.


The winter season is marked as Hemanta ritu and Sisira ritu in ayurveda. Hemanta ritu starts from mid November and ends in mid January. This falls in southern solstice which is called as visarga kala or dakshinayana in ayurveda. Sisira ritu starts from mid January and lasts till middle of march. Sisira ritu falls in Northern solstice which is called as Aadana kaala or uttaraayana.


The response of human body to this season is very well explained in ayurveda. People will have increased strength and their digestion capacity is increased .This is marked by increased hunger. These symptoms are caused by increased body fire which is supported by vata. Vata inside body increases in winter because of cold and dryness which is prevalent in outer atmosphere.


The winter time depression is noticed mostly in persons who have vata as major constituent in their prakriti or body constitution. The cause for this type of change is longer nights of winter.
Light therapy is recommended by doctors for winter time blues. Exposure to artificial light may cause headache , Irritability ,Eye strain , Inability to sleep and fatigue. Exposure to sunlight and if sunlight is not available sitting near fireplace is the remedy suggested in Ayurveda.


Keeping the home well lit with lights help to reduce the intensity of depression.


Moderate exercise like yoga is another remedy for winter depression. Ayurveda recommends oil massage (abhyanga) to body and head (moordha taila.). Indulging in sexual act to keep the moods elevated and to keep the body warm is another strongly suggested ayurvedic remedy.
Meeting friends who are kind and understanding boosts morale and brightens up the day. Spending time with friends on the beach helps to expose your body to sunlight and keeps your spirits high.

Expose yourself to sunlight as much as you can. In absence of sun light sitting near fire place is very helpful.


Massage your body with vata balancing herbal oil (abhyanga). Never forget to apply oil on your head (moordha taila.).


Then remove the oil by taking hot water bath. A mixture of flours of yellow gram (channa), green gram (moong) , fenu greek seeds (methi) in equal proportion is the best herbal scrub which can be used to remove the oil. This mixture prevents the washing of natural oil from skin.
Consume hot soups.
Use vata balancing foods like wheat, oil, corn, black gram and jaggery.
Tickle your taste buds with sweet, sour and salt tastes
Always use hot water for all daily routine activity.
Use thick blankets and sheets made of cotton, silk and wool.
Always wear foot wear.
Indulge in sexual act.
Spend your leisure time with friends and relatives whom you like.

A Healthy Lifestyle Pays Off in the Short-Term Too

When I write about making lifestyle changes like retooling your diet based on your body's unique metabolic type or getting the right amount of exercise every day, you may still be resisting my suggestions for optimizing your health based on the payoff: How long will it take to see some benefits with all these changes I'm making? Don't use that excuse, thanks to a study to shows how you can improve your memory by exercising daily, eating better foods, stretching and doing memory exercises in just 14 days.

More than 30 adults with no memory problems, ranging in age from 35-70, were assigned either to no plan or one that featured daily exercise, relaxation techniques, crossword puzzles and the like and smaller meals rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

Not surprisingly, based on PET scans taken before and after the study, patients who took the healthier path experienced a huge decrease in brain metabolism in areas linked to improved cognitive functioning, meaning people were using their brains more efficiently than before.

The other fact the lead researcher mentioned about making beneficial lifestyle changes was just as important: It's never too early or too late to get started.

Vaccine Makers Getting Inoculated From Lawsuits

If Congressional leaders -- led by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) -- have anything to say about it, the mega-drugmakers will soon get the protection they've been seeking against consumer lawsuits related to the harmful vaccines they're peddling to prevent an Avian flu epidemic that will likely never happen.

I suspect the House approved the measure Monday largely because it was attached to a defense bill that funds military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, a move blasted by opponents, In fact, the bill offers liability protections to any product used to fight "an epidemic," and the government decides what constitutes one. Even worse, no court can review that decision, says Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.).

And, to add insult to injury, the bill calls for a compensation plan modeled after similar laws approved for other vaccines, but appropriates no money to fund it, yet it sets aside nearly $4 billion for pandemic preparedness. Sounds a lot like payback time for Congress, considering drug companies spend more on government lobbying than any other industry.

Three safe ways to protect your health from the flu and without the need for any health-harming vaccines or drugs:

Use plain soap -- not antibacterial compounds -- to keep your hands clean.
Get plenty of sleep.
Reduce, with the plan of eliminating, sugar from your diet.

Sugar May Lessen Pain in Some Children

Some experts believe sugar -- one of the most health-harming substances you can consume -- acts as an analgesic (pain reliever) in some children. A recent study seems to link the "relief" to the child's affinity for sweets and their body weight.

In the study, some 200 children ranging from ages 5-10 and their mothers were evaluated to determine their sucrose preferences. On the whole, children preferred higher levels of sweetness than adults. About half the youngsters (and one quarter of the adults) preferred a sweetness concentration of 14 teaspoons per 8-ounce glass.

After measuring their tolerance for pain using a cold pressor test (indicates how long subjects can keep their hands in 50 degree water), the children who preferred higher levels of sucrose experienced less pain. However, the overweight and at-risk to be overweight did not have the same tolerance increase.

Although the sugar and pain parallels are interesting, this should not be read as, "Give your child sugar when he or she hurts." There are countless ways sugar can be harmful to adult and children's health. In fact, you'll probably be surprised just how much sugar your kids are already consuming, particularly from sweet drinks. This leads to a plethora of problems including childhood obesity – a major cause of serious illness.

According to a growing body of evidence, scientists believe the act of going shopping stimulates dopamine, a signaling molecule released by nerves in the substantia nigra.

In research performed a decade ago, rats allowed to explore new areas in their cages experienced a surge in their dopamine levels. So, because shopping involves searching for the new and exciting, it's not surprising dopamine may be connected.

Also, dopamine surges are linked to the anticipation of the thing you're looking for, meaning it can lead to impulsive purchases for things you or your family may never need, scientists said.

Some common-sense and healthy means to curb your shopping urge and feel calm as the holidays season slowly winds down to a close:

Make a list of gifts and stick to it.
Do your window shopping after stores have closed.
