Youtharia is a natural supplement geared towards rejuvenating your entire biological system
Youtharia is a natural supplement geared towards rejuvenating your entire biological system, impeding the aging process, and promoting longevity. It will:
Enhance Your Cardiac Output.
Increase Your Energy and Stamina.
Strengthen Your Immune System.
Restore Your Sleep Physiology.
Improve Your Appearance.
Elevate Your Sense of Well-Being.
Aging is an accumulation of lifelong damage to macromolecules, cells, tissues and organs. The maximum life span known for humans is 122.5 years. Genetic differences between humans account for different aging rates, including efficiency of DNA repair, types and quantities of antioxidant enzymes, and different rates of free radical production.
Common diseases among older people are cardiovascular disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, and hypertension. For chronic diseases and conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, depression, psychiatric disorders, osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease, and urinary incontinence, much remains to be learned about their distribution in the population, associated risk factors, and effective measures to prevent or delay their onset.
The epidemiologic transition, combined with the increasing number of older persons, represents a challenge for public health. In the United States, approximately 80% of all persons are aged above 65 years and have at least one chronic condition, and 50% have at least two conditions. As the population ages, the impact of Alzheimer's disease, which doubles every 5 years after the age of 65, is also expected to increase. Chronic conditions also can lead to severe disability. In the United States alone, arthritis affects approximately 59% of persons aged 65 years and above and is the leading cause of disability.

AyurGold-Maintain Optimal Blood Chemistry for Good Health
If the blood glucose level falls to dangerous levels (caused by very heavy exercise or lack of food for extended periods), some pancreas cells release glucagon, a hormone that acts on liver cells to increase blood glucose levels.
Stored glycogen is converted into glucose by a process called glycogenolysis. The glucose is then released into the bloodstream, increasing blood sugar levels.
Blood sugar levels are also increased by "stress" hormones such as adrenalin, steroids, infections, trauma, and the ingestion of food. When levels of blood sugar rise, whether as a result of glycogen conversion, or from the digestion of a meal, a different hormone is released from beta cells found in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.
This hormone, insulin, causes the liver to convert more glucose into glycogen. This process is called glycogenesis and it forces about two-thirds of body cells (primarily muscle and fat tissue cells) to take up glucose from the blood, thereby decreasing blood sugar levels. A breakdown in body homeostasis can lead to dangerously high or low blood sugar levels.
This can become a chronic condition leading to the onset of diabetes. According to the World Health Organization, in 1985, an estimated 30 million people worldwide had diabetes. By 1995, this number shot up to 135 million. The latest WHO estimate for the number of people with diabetes worldwide is 177 million. This will increase to at least 300 million by 2025.
The number of deaths attributed to diabetes is likely to be around 4 million. These projections take into account the fact that there will be more people in the world due to population growth and that there will be more elderly people due to population aging.
They also account for urbanization - the fact that people are moving from rural areas to cities, particularly in developing countries. This migration affects the number of people who are likely to have diabetes, because people living in cities of developing countries tend to be less physically active and have higher levels of obesity than people in rural areas.
In fact, current trends in obesity suggest that these projections are conservative and that the increase in the prevalence of diabetes may be even greater. In developing countries, people in the middle and most productive years of their lives are particularly affected by diabetes.
In these countries, three-quarters of all people with diabetes are under 65 years old and 25% of all adults with diabetes are younger than 44. In developed countries, more than half of all people with diabetes are older than 65, and only 8% of adults with diabetes are younger than 44. Because of its chronic nature, the severity of its complications, and the means required to control it, diabetes is a costly disease, not only for the affected individuals and the families involved, but also for the health authorities.
Studies in India estimate that, for a low-income Indian family, as much as 25% of family income may be devoted to diabetes care. For families in the USA, the corresponding figure is 10%. The total healthcare cost of a person with diabetes in the USA is between two and three times those for people without the condition.
A recent analysis of healthcare expenditure in the Western Pacific region has shown that 16% of hospital expenditure was spent on people afflicted with diabetes. In the Republic of the Marshall Islands, this figure was 25%. The cost of diabetes affects everyone, everywhere, but they are not only a financial problem. Intangible costs (pain, anxiety, inconvenience, and generally lower quality of life) also have great impact on the lives of patients and their families and are the most difficult to quantify.
Direct costs to individuals and their families include medical care, drugs, insulin, and other supplies. Patients may also have to bear other personal costs, such as increased payments for health and life insurance. Recent treatment cost estimates for Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico were US $3.9 billion, US $0.8 billion and US $2.0 billion, respectively.
Each of these is an annual figure and is rising as prevalence of diabetes increases. For most countries, the largest portion of diabetes expenditure is cost of hospital admissions for the treatment of long-term complications, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and foot problems.
Western medicine relies on aggressive prescription drugs and surgery to deal with many problems related to irregular blood chemistry in the body. Unfortunately, these methods often result in unwanted and even dangerous side effects. And natural pills provide only fleeting, inconsistent results.
Ayurveda, the science of life, prevention and longevity, is the oldest and most holistic and comprehensive medical system available. Its fundamentals can be found in Hindu scriptures called the Vedas - the ancient Indian books of wisdom written over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda applies the inherent principles of nature to help maintain optimum health in a person by keeping the individual's body, mind, and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature.
India Herbs has a seasoned group of Ayurvedic doctors specialized in Vajikarana, one of the eight major specialties of Ayurveda. Vajikarana prescribes the therapeutic use of various herbal and tonic preparations to address the root cause of irregular blood chemistry, while strengthening your body and overall well-being.

Kama Yogi - Sexual dysfunction may take many forms.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the key causes of sexual dysfunction is due to rapid urbanization, increased consumption of energy-dense foods high in saturated fats and sugars and depression.
When a man finds himself unable to get and maintain a sufficient erection due to physical causes, it can cause depression and anxiety.
By the same token, when a man finds he suffers ED only in certain circumstances, physiological factors may be the source of the problem. While psychological factors can play a big role in sexual problems, studies have suggested that 20 - 50% of men with erectile dysfunction have some organic basis for their problem.
Sexual dysfunction may range from mild (low not allowed drive, weak erections, lack of energy, slow and weak ejaculation) to severe (total inability to achieve erection and complete lack of sexual desire). In many cases, sexual dysfunction or sluggish sexual responses may be caused by poor systemic health, stress, the build up of toxins and unhealthy lifestyles.
In a way, sexual health can be seen as a sort of ‘barometer’ of overall systemic and psychological health.
Men who are healthy, fit and confident about themselves and about life usually report a vigorous and satisfying not allowed life, no matter what their age.
Practitioners of Ayurveda have many centuries of knowledge regarding the use of herbal medicines and holistic techniques to treat a wide variety of medical problems and to promote optimum health and functioning. In this respect, certain Yoga techniques practices have been identified as having the ability to improve sexual functioning and overall systemic health.
Traditionally, Yoga is the divine science, a gift of God to his creation. When man has reached a certain stage of evolution, Yoga is "revealed" to a few great saints who are empowered to transmit it to qualified pupils and through them to successive generations.
The earliest archaeological evidence for the practice of yoga is afforded by drawings of men in the posture of yogic meditation excavated in the Indus valley - dating from at least 3000 BC! The earliest literary evidence is found in references to the practice of Yoga in the Vedas, the oldest books in the world, parts of which were composed in Northern India not later the 2500 BC; it is widely believed by scholars that Yoga existed and was handed down orally for thousands of years before that.
India Herbs has a seasoned group of Ayurvedic doctors specialized in Vajikarana, one of the eight major specialties of Ayurveda (the ancient science dealing with medicine).
Vajikarana is "a process or a drug, which make a man sexually as strong as a horse and able to copulate for long and frequently with many wives and partners. " India Herbs' Vajikarana scientists have integrated a series of yogic techniques and practices based on millennia old wisdom to reignite inert bodily functions caused by stress and energy deprivation.

Flaxseed May Relieve Hot Flashes
A small pilot study found that postmenopausal women not on estrogen who used dietary flaxseed daily reported a 50 percent reduction in hot flashes over the course of six weeks.
"Flaxseed worked very well," said Dr. Sandhya Pruthi, director of the Mayo Breast Clinic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. "The women who used it said it really helped them."
But another expert, Dr. Wulf H. Utian, executive director of the North American Menopause Society, cautioned that the study was too preliminary to prove that flaxseed is effective.
While hormone replacement therapy, particularly estrogen, is effective against hot flashes, its long-term use has fallen out of favor since the large study known as the Women's Health Initiative found an increased risk of heart disease, breast cancer and other problems with long-term HRT use. So, Pruthi and her team were looking at options for women who suffered from hot flashes but didn't want to take estrogen.
They enrolled 29 postmenopausal women, median age 55, in the study. To join, the women had to have at least 14 hot flashes a week for at least one month.
"Flaxseed has some natural phytoestrogens," Pruthi said, explaining how it, like the hormone estrogen, could possibly have an effect on hot flashes.
Over the course of the study, the women sprinkled 40 grams of crushed flaxseed daily into yogurt or cereal or mixed it with orange juice or water.
In the end, 21 women completed the study; others had dropped out because of side effects. Of those who finished, the researchers said, the frequency of hot flashes declined 50 percent, and the hot flash score -- a combined measure of a flash's severity and frequency -- was found to have decreased about 57 percent.
"By the second or third week, most women noticed improvement," Pruthi said, adding that she is now planning a larger study to compare flaxseed to a placebo.
Until those results are in, Utian is not convinced the flaxseed is a proven treatment for hot flashes.
"This reduction [in the pilot study] could fall into the placebo effect," he said.
The study was also relatively brief, he added. And many women experiencing menopause suffer many more hot flashes than 14 a week. (Fifteen of the Mayo study women reported 10 or more a week, but 13 reported 2 to 9 a week.)
Utian added, however, that he was not aware of any harm in eating flaxseed.
And Pruthi said that because the fiber content gave some women in the study abdominal discomfort, those that find it hard on the stomach should consider starting at a lower dose and working up.
Her research was just published in the summer 2007 issue of the Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology.

Protecting your Skin from the Sun
Over-protecting from sun is not a good idea. The challenge is to maximize the benefit from sun and at the same time protect it from damage.
People with Caucasian skin definitely should avoid direct exposure to strong sun, because their skin makes less melanin, the pigment that acts as a barrier to UV rays. However, short periods of exposure to very early morning sun are soothing and mild on the skin, and allow even very sensitive skin to absorb necessary Vitamin D.
The Council of Maharishi Ayurveda Physicians recommends avoiding long exposure to the sun whenever you are angry, hungry or emotionally upset, as these factors increase Pitta -- the fire element -- in the body and make the skin even more sensitive to sun damage. At these times, it's important to protect yourself by wearing a hat, protective clothing (full-sleeved shirts and pants, for example) and sunglasses. People with naturally more Pitta in their bodies should always take care to protect themselves from the midday sun.
Dietary TipsIt's also a good idea to cool the body from the inside if your skin is very photosensitive. Eating green leafy vegetables and fruits such as raisins, sweet juicy pears, sweet apples, and pomegranates, for instance, will help nourish and restore balance to the skin. Amla Berry, available as a supplement and also contained in Amrit, is also an excellent anti-oxidant and rasayana for the skin. Rose Petal Preserve, blended with boiled and cooled milk, is an excellent cooling beverage.
Cooking your food with a skin-protecting spice mixture to stimulate digestion but not overheat your skin helps. Sauté equal parts turmeric, coriander, fennel and cumin in ghee and add it to your vegetables and grains.
Even in winter, people with photosensitive skin should avoid eating too much ginger, garlic, aesofetida (hing), red chillies or any types of hot peppers as hot foods can increase sensitivity to the sun.
Herbs for the SkinWatermelon puree is an excellent mask to cool down facial skin. Apply it evenly, except in the eye area, and rinse off with room temperature or lukewarm water after 10-15 minutes. Cotton pads soaked in rose water can be placed over closed eyes.
Another good way to cool the skin is with a milk bath. Add a couple of drops of rose water to room temperature milk and either rinse your face with it, followed by room temperature water, or apply generously with cotton pads and rinse off after ten minutes with room temperature water.
The Youthful Skin Cream contains Butea monosperma (Flame of Forest), which is renowned in ayurveda for helping to boost the skin's natural long-term resistance to sun damage as well as antioxidants to fight free radical damage. This cream is not a sunscreen or sunblock, but it can help keep skin cells healthy and well-nourished.
Winter Tips -- Beyond SunscreenDrink plenty of water, and avoid very hot water for baths and showers if your skin is photosensitive to keep your skin properly moisturized and to protect it from the sun.
Take a warm bath before and after skiing or exposing your skin to freezing temperatures for a long period of time. Any time it's freezing outside, the pores of the skin freeze shut and heat is retained in the deeper layers. This heat dries out the skin and lowers its resistance to the sun. That is why many people get worse sunburns after skiing than at the beach, and it's also why some people's skin breaks out after a skiing trip. A warm bath before and after tackling the slopes helps dilate frozen channels and supports the skin in its effort to release heat trapped in the deeper layers.

Are You Sleeping Enough for Your Health?
On a typical day in America, 125 million people wake up feeling exhausted. They reach to shut off the alarm clock with bleary eyes, vowing to get more sleep. But for 50 percent of the nation's population, getting a good night's sleep is as difficult as flying to the moon.
Indeed, insomnia and fatigue are now considered America's top health problems. Researchers have identified lack of sleep as a cause of serious disorders ranging from diabetes to high stress levels. The results show that it is taking a huge toll on the quality of life -- and the health -- of millions.
Here are some research facts that might make you head for the bed: sleep deprivation is credited with 60 percent of road accidents -- and drivers who stayed awake over 17 hours suffered impaired coordination, reaction time and judgment worse than drivers who were legally drunk.
As far as health goes, those who sleep fewer than six hours a night don't live as long as those who sleep seven hours or more. Sleeping only four hours a night can cause weight gain, diabetes, and high blood pressure. And the disasters are not limited to health -- sleeplessness costs the U.S. economy $150 billion a year in higher levels of worker stress and reduced productivity, estimates the National Sleep Foundation.Stress and Insomnia: A Vicious Cycle
What are the causes of this epidemic? One of the reasons that insomnia (defined as having trouble sleeping) is on the rise in America is the high stress levels and time pressures associated with modern living. We are increasingly a 24/7 society. Many people would gladly get more sleep if they could, but the information age, which was supposed to make everything more efficient, has just made everything more busy.
Americans frequently fall into a vicious cycle, with stress during the day causing them to be too tense or worried to fall asleep at night. And then the lack of sleep, in turn, creates more stress on the job and at home. Others simply choose to short-change their sleep.
Our society seems to place a moral value on sleeping as little as possible," says Dr. Eve Van Couter, head of a recent research study at the University of Chicago.
For whatever reason, Americans today often sleep less than six hours a night, making them highly vulnerable to sleep disorders, the stress syndrome, and to multiple health problems.
Natural Solutions Needed Unfortunately, most people are treating insomnia either by going to the drugstore and buying over-the-counter drugs, or by consulting their medical doctor.
Neither solution is working. Over-the-counter drugs contain antihistamines, which knock you out, but don't create a good quality of sleep or solve the underlying problem.
Plus, they undermine the immune system. Doctors tend to prescribe valium-like drugs that are addictive within even a week of use.

Balancing Stomach Acid:
Individuals with a pitta imbalance are susceptible to hyperacidity, peptic ulcers, and some types of inflammatory disorders. Stress, anger, impatience, extra-hot spicy foods, and environmental factors such as extreme heat can aggravate pitta. A few simple changes in lifestyle and diet can help bring pitta into balance for smoother, more effective digestion and greater calm and contentment.
Pitta is the heat energy within every cell but it is mainly located in the stomach area. Excess intake of heat producing foods can mean that the digestive tract overreacts with an increase in acid production. Pitta aggravating foods such as vinegar, tomatoes, sour citrus fruits, orange juice, salsa, yogurt (except lassi) onions, garlic, chili peppers, salty fried foods, and alcohol all aggravate the digestion when too much acid is present. These foods should be completely avoided until the acid level is brought into complete balance. And if there is a sensitivity to these foods they should be avoided in general.
It is important to not skip meals if you suffer from acid indigestion. Eating breakfast is especially crucial. Even if you are not especially hungry in the morning, it is important to at least take something light like stewed fruit, warm milk, or a date shake. Skipping breakfast has the effect of aggravating a subdosha of pitta called sadhaka pitta which governs the emotional heart. It is responsible for contentment and bliss. As lunch time approaches, with agni (the digestive fire) increasing and so also stomach acid, an empty stomach is not ideal from the ayurvedic viewpoint. It may result in irritability, anger, impatience and a feeling of being over hungry so that when lunch time comes you tend to overeat.
Try to avoid high-stress situations and practice stress management techniques. Enjoy natural beauty. The appreciation of natural beauty helps to balance sadhaka pitta and reduces stress. Favor cooling foods and drinks such as fresh coconut juice. Use an electric drill to make a hole in the coconut and use a straw to sip on the coconut juice. Use the fresh coconut meat in your vegetables, rice dishes, or chutneys. If you feel discomfort during the day, take a few sips of cool milk on an empty stomach.

New Eye Condition Striking Young Chinese Americans
Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine, in California, tracked 16 people for seven years and observed more than 100 others. They concluded that there's a new eye syndrome occurring in the young Chinese population in the United States.
Fortunately, this new syndrome may be less likely than typical glaucoma to cause severe vision loss or blindness, the authors said. They published their findings in the March issue of Ophthalmology.
Glaucoma results from damage to the optic nerve, which transmits information from the eye to the brain. It's believed that the optic nerve damage is caused by high eye pressure. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, affecting one in 200 people over the age of 50.
The Stanford researchers said that many young Chinese patients diagnosed with glaucoma have normal eye pressure. They suspect that the optic nerve damage is actually caused by stretching of the eye associated with nearsightedness, which rarely gets worse after age 30, meaning optic nerve damage may slow or stabilize.
This means that doctors need to carefully assess young Chinese patients with suspected glaucoma and not rush into aggressive treatment, such as surgery.
"If they don't appear to be progressing toward blindness right now, they shouldn't be treated as if they have a blinding condition, especially since surgery is associated with significant risks," Dr. Kuldev Singh, professor of ophthalmology, said in a prepared statement.
He noted that other researchers have reported an increase in nearsightedness among people of Chinese ancestry.
Singh and his colleagues are currently surveying young people of Chinese ancestry at Stanford. Their preliminary findings show a high prevalence of optic nerve damage.
"The next step is to learn more about the natural history and genetics of this condition and see whether there are subsets of the population more prone to it," Singh said.

Groundhogs, Other Hibernators, Could Aid Human Health
Biologists now think that Phil and his fellow groundhogs, along with other animals in hibernation, could foreshadow advances in human health.
In fact, hibernators' amazing ability to manipulate their own metabolisms could lead to breakthroughs in improving organ transplant and in fighting such illnesses as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and even Alzheimer's, research shows.
"Remember, our physiology, and even our genetic makeup, isn't that different, in terms of basic bodily functions, [from] these hibernating mammals," said Hannah Carey, a professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
"The blueprint, the genes to do these things are there -- we're just not activating the same physiological pathways," said Carey, who is also president-elect of the American Physiological Society.
A wide range of mammals hibernate, from tiny squirrels to the grizzly bear. And hibernation isn't restricted to cold-weather climates: Scientists recently discovered that a Madagascar primate, the fat-tailed lemur, also goes into the hibernating state known as "torpor" during that tropical island's dry season.
"Torpor is a word we use for this state of physiological down-regulation," Carey explained. "Hearts slow down to a few beats per minute, and the animals are breathing only a few breaths per minute. Blood flow is very slowed, and their metabolism is suppressed."
Body temperature during torpor can fall to near-freezing in many hibernating squirrels, Carey added. In fact, the Arctic ground squirrel's hibernating temperature actually drops below freezing.
Close investigation of hibernating states is giving scientists new insight into animal physiology and, as a bonus, human health and disease as well. Some examples:
- Organ transplant. Harvested human organs kept at cold temperatures can only remain viable for a few days at most. So, how do squirrels' livers and intestines stay perfectly healthy at less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit for weeks on end? In one study, "we found that [hibernating] squirrels maintain, in a much healthier state, the microcirculation of the liver," Carey said. Insights into just how this happens could increase the viability and number of human organs available for transplant, she said.
- Heart attack. Rousing from weeks of torpor, hibernating mammals flood their near-dormant organs with fresh blood, a process called reperfusion. But doctors know that the speedy reperfusion of hearts after heart attack is, in itself, a major cause of damage to cardiac tissues. "But hibernators, faced with the very same kind of experimental insult, are very well-protected," Carey said. "They seem to have bumped up their defenses." Understanding those natural defenses might lead to better heart attack care, she said.
- Obesity. Gregory Florant, a biology professor at Colorado State University, has been studying the role in hibernation of a fat cell-secreted hormone called leptin. He explained that leptin, along with other biochemical signals, may help typically ravenous animals shut down their appetites as winter approaches. "Likewise, if we can determine what the hierarchy here is for shutting down the appetite, that may allow us to make gains on how to curb people's appetites so they don't eat as much," he said.
- Diabetes. Gearing up for hibernation means packing on weight -- a lot of weight. And hibernation means mammals turn into "the ultimate couch potatoes," Florant said. So, why don't these fattened-up bears, groundhogs and squirrels slip into type 2 diabetes, as humans so easily do? "That's a really interesting health perspective," Florant said. "They never go into frank diabetes, even though they become almost morbidly obese." Unraveling that mystery could lead to new ways to fight diabetes, he added.
- Alzheimer's. Carey pointed to another intriguing phenomenon: As the time mammals spend in torpor increases, vital cell connections begin to weaken within their brains. However, most hibernating mammals actually rouse themselves in their burrows every so often, and this appears to help these neural connections reestablish themselves. "So, people are saying, 'these guys are great models for things like Alzheimer's disease and [brain] lesions such as neurodegeneration,' " Carey said. In essence, hibernating mammals experience real brain damage, "but then they reverse themselves," according to Carey.
Finding out how that happens could further human brain research, she said.
With all of these physiological advantages, Punxsutawney Phil and his mammalian brethren appear to be on to something, the experts said.
"Different animals come up with different ways to cope with environmental stresses," Carey said. "Of course, we use our brains, so we have coats, electric heaters, that kind of thing. But it's really cold here in Wisconsin right now: Sometimes I look out there and think that maybe hibernation is a pretty smart idea."

Breathe: Ayurvedic Tips for Healthy Lungs
It can then be distributed to other sites in the respiratory tract manifesting as imbalances. Although accumulation of mucus does not inherently mean that a respiratory imbalance will develop, it is indicative of low agni, or digestive fire. Low agni is among the common causes of respiratory imbalances and very often, the treatment protocol involves enkindling the digestive fire so that digestion can operate more optimally. Other causes of lung imbalances include:
- Improper diet
- Polluted air
- Seasonal changes
- Poor posture
- Lack of exercise
- Excessive grief and attachment
Although there can be an imbalance of the other doshas, vata and pitta, resulting in more asthmatic (vata) and infectious (pitta) conditions, people with excess kapha and kapha predominate constitutions are generally more susceptible to imbalances involving excess mucus.
Common manifestations are:
- Colds and flu
- Congestion
- Bronchitis
- Pneumonia
- Swollen glands or lymphatic congestion
Sore Throat Ayurveda offers ways to bring an increased dosha back into balance through diet, lifestyle and herbal supplements.DietFollow a kapha reducing diet. Guidelines can be found by clicking this link: http://www.banyanbotanicals.com/constitutions/balancing_kapha.htmlHere are some simple tips to follow:
- Avoid heavy, dense foods such as meat and cheese.
- Avoid fatty, fried foods.
- Eliminate dairy.
- Sip hot water with lemon and honey with meals and throughout the day.
- Include warm digestive spices in your diet such as ginger, cloves, cardamom and black pepper.
- Do not overeat or drink in excess.
Have your mid-day meal be the largest, eating a lighter breakfast and dinner. HerbsBanyan's Lung Formula blends pippali, licorice, cane sugar and other herbs to nourish and support healthy respiration. This formula supports healthy lung function.
Take 1-2 tablets, once or twice daily, or as directed by your health practitioner. In the case of low digestive fire, an appetite stimulant and digestive aid such as Trikatu can be taken.LifestyleThe key lifestyle tip to balancing kapha and maintaining good lung health is exercise. Kapha dosha can be very stubborn, dense and sticky.
Warming the body through exercise helps to liquefy this substance, bringing it back to the digestive tract in order to be eliminated. When exercising, the breathing rate increases to meet the body's demand for more oxygen. This helps to expand lung capacity, keeping them functioning optimally. Other daily lifestyle practices that can help keep the respiratory tract clear are:
Nasya oil - lubricates the nasal passages and supports uncongested breathing
Neti pot - removes mucus and pollution from the nasal passages Meditation Meditation reduces stress, calms the mind and is an effective practice to help dissolve negative emotions that can be detrimental to your health. The calming and relaxating effect of meditation can help to regulate breathing patterns, improving lung function.
Sit quietly, firmly rooted, focusing on the crown of your head and your breath.
Bring your awareness to the natural rhythm of your breath.
Notice the gentle inhalation, exhalation and the short pause of retention in between.
If the mind begins to wander, invite it back to the breath.
Allow thoughts to ebb and flow with the breath, staying perfectly present to each moment.
Practice meditating 10-20 minutes every day. YogaRegular practice of yoga improves posture and keeps the body's channels open and free flowing. Linking breath and movement is an optimal way to invite space and increase vitality within the body's tissues and organs. Asana or postures that move the rib cage and stretch the intercostal muscles help to keep lungs healthy. By bringing more flexibility into the ribs, back and shoulders, the lungs can expand more fully.
To also keep kapha dosha in check, practice yoga asanas more vigorously. Sun Salutations, Suryanamaskar, or any continuously linked yoga practice including many standing postures can help to raise the heart rate and improve lung function.PranayamaYogic breathwork or pranayama is an excellent way to revitalize prana within the body.
Pranayama is a practice in controlling the breath. Pranayama cleanses and strengthens the physical body while calming and clearing the mind. It is important to practice with the proper posture to allow the breath to move freely in the body. Pranayama may be the ultimate tool to help support healthy lung function. It conditions the diaphragm while helping to more fully oxygenate the blood. Try alternate nostril breathing to balance the breath and support the lungs.
Position the right hand (you may choose to alternate with each practice) in vishnu mudra by folding the index finger and third finger inwards to lightly touch at the base of the thumb. Your pinkie finger rests by the side of the ring finger. You will alternately use your thumb to close your right nostril and your ring and pinkie fingers, working as one, to close your left. Rest your left hand comfortably in your lap. The breath should never feel forced. Envision the breath as a light thread of silk, lengthening effortlessly with each inhalation and exhalation.
Keeping the breath relaxed, subtle and light:
Close the left nostril and exhale completely through the right.
Inhale fully, through the right nostril.
Inhale through left nostril.
Close left nostril and exhale through right nostril.
This is one round. Begin a slow and regular practice of 5-10 rounds. Rest after your practice and notice how you are feeling. Once comfortable with this practice, you can begin mentally counting to four on your inhalation, pause at the space between the breath and then count to four as you exhale so that the length of your inhalation and exhalation are equal.

Ayurveda Body Cleanse Tips
Three Kinds of Toxins
Ayurveda describes three kinds of toxins. The most common type is ama, which is the sticky waste-product of digestion that builds up in the digestive tract when your digestion is either weak or overloaded with the wrong foods.
If ama is not cleared from the body and continues to build up, eventually it can leave the digestive tract and start circulating through the body. Once it settles in a specific area, over time ama becomes reactive and mixes with the subdoshas, the dhatus (body tissues), or malas (waste products such as urine). When it mixes with these parts of the physiology, it becomes amavisha, a more reactive, toxic type of ama.
The third type of toxins are what we would call environmental toxins today. Environmental toxins come from outside the body and include pesticides and chemical fertilizers in food, as well as preservatives, additives and genetically engineered foods. Food that has "gone bad" and is filled with harmful bacteria also falls in this category. Other garavisha toxins include arsenic, lead, asbestos, chemicals in detergents and household supplies, poisons, air and water pollution, chemicals and synthetics in clothing, and recreational drugs.
Amavisha and garavisha types of toxins are best handled by an ayurvedic physician, but there are a number of things you can do on an ongoing basis to prevent ama from building up in your body.
Signs That You May Have an Ama Build-Up
If you experience a heavy feeling in your body, if your joints are stiff, if your tongue is coated when you wake up in the morning, if you have an unpleasant body odor, if you feel dull and sleepy after eating, if your mind is foggy, you may have a build-up of ama in the body. Diarrhea, constipation, joint pain, sadness, dullness, lowered immunity, frequent bouts of colds and flu are all health problems that can be caused by ama.
Ama clogs the channels of circulation in the body, preventing the unrestricted flow of nutrients to the cells and organs. Or it can clog the channels that carry waste from the cells and tissues, resulting in a toxic build-up.
How Ama is Created: Diet and Lifestyle Factors
Ama is the waste product of incomplete digestion, so any dietary or lifestyle habits that disrupt digestion can cause ama.
If you eat foods that are too heavy to digest, such as fried foods, hard cheeses, meats, leftovers, junk foods, processed foods, and rich desserts, these can overload your digestion and cause ama to form. Cold foods and drinks -- such as ice cream, ice-cold water and foods straight from the refrigerator -- also are hard to digest, since cold temperatures put out the digestive fire.
How much food and the type of food you can easily digest depends on your digestive capacity. Digestion can be weak, strong, or irregular, depending on your body type or imbalances:
If your digestion is weak or dull (a characteristic associated with Kapha dosha), and you eat too much food or food that is too heavy for your digestive system, you'll form ama.
Someone with a strong digestion (associated with Pitta dosha) will be able to eat larger quantities and richer foods without forming ama. A person with an irregular digestion (associated with Vata body type) will find that their appetite and digestive ability fluctuates -- sometimes it's strong and sometimes weak.
You need to adjust your eating and habits to suit your digestive type. Digestion also fluctuates according to the seasons, and if you don't adjust your diet and lifestyle when the weather changes, you may form ama. For detailed information on foods and eating habits for each body type and the seasons, visit the foods section)
Digestion can also be weakened by poor eating habits. For instance, not eating at the same time every day, not eating the main meal at noon when the digestion is stronger, skipping meals or eating between meals can all throw the digestion out of balance.
An irregular daily routine can also disrupt your digestion and cause ama. Mental, emotional and physical stress is another cause of incomplete digestion and ama. If you've ever tried eating when you're upset, and felt the stomach pains afterwards, you know why this is so. In general, any time go against your own nature, or fall out of harmony with natural law, your digestion will reflect that and create ama.
An Ama-Reducing Diet
If a person has simple ama, it's generally possible to remove it from the body by enhancing or balancing agni, the digestive fire. First of all, it's important to begin an ama -reducing diet. This is a simple diet, consisting of warm, freshly-cooked whole foods that are light, easy to digest, and are suitable for the person's body type and season.
The ama -reducing diet includes fresh, organic vegetables; sweet, juicy fruits; whole grains such as quinoa, cous cous, rye, barley, amaranth, millet and rice; and easily digested proteins such as mung dhal or lentil soup. Lassi -- a drink made in the blender with one part freshly made yogurt, four parts water, and salt or honey for flavor -- is an excellent digestion -- booster to drink after a meal because it contains acidophilus, a friendly bacteria that aids digestion. Cooked leafy greens such as chard and kale are especially good for improving elimination and helping to detoxify the body.
The vegetables and grains should be cooked with tasty spices that are suitable for your body type and the season, such as Vata, Pitta or Kapha Churna from Ayurveda. Avoid all of the foods that we mentioned earlier as a cause of ama -- fried foods, heavy foods such as aged cheese, meat, rich desserts -- anything that is difficult to digest should be left out of your diet. Avoid eating or drinking anything cold.
Drinking warm water throughout the day is a good way to flush out ama and toxins of all kinds, especially if you add detoxifying spices to make a tea.
Detoxifying Tea
Boil two quarts of water in the morning. Add 1/4 t. whole cumin, 1/2 t. whole coriander, 1/2 t. whole fennel and let steep for ten minutes with the lid on. Strain out the spices and pour water into a thermos and sip throughout the day. Start fresh by making a new batch of tea each morning.
Lifestyle
TipsThe most important thing is to eat your main meal at noon, when the sun is strongest and the digestive fire reflects that strength. If you eat too much at night, or eat heavy foods such as meat or cheese then, the food will sit in your stomach and create ama. Eat light at night and your food will be easily digested before you go to sleep.
It's also important to eat all three meals at the same time every day. If your body gets used to a regular routine, the digestive juices will start to ready themselves before the meal, and will be more efficient in digesting. If you eat at all different times, your digestion will be thrown off.
Don't snack between meals unless you are actually hungry, and wait until the food is digested before eating a meal. If your digestion is already occupied with digesting and you add new food on top of that, the result is ama, the sour, undigested waste product of undigested food.
Other aspects of the ayurvedic routine are also important. Going to sleep before 10 p.m. is essential, because then during the Pitta time of night (10-2) your digestion has a chance to cleanse and rejuvenate itself. If you stay up, you'll probably feel hungry about midnight and will want to eat, which will tax the digestion and create ama.
Waking up before 6 a.m. is recommended, as if you sleep late into the Kapha time of the morning (6-10 a.m.), the channels of your body will become clogged with ama and you'll feel dull and tired.
Daily exercise that is suitable for your body type will stimulate digestion and help cleanse the body of toxins. It's also important to manage your stress, and to have a job that your enjoy and is not too taxing for your body type. Everyone can benefit from spending time each day practicing the Transcendental Meditation® program to remove mental, emotional and physical stress.
Herbs That Heal: Espically for Internal Cleansing
Ayurveda offers a range of detoxification products. For all types of toxins, the first and foremost treatment is to improve elimination. Digest Tone is an excellent herbal formula for supporting regular bowel movements. Taking two to five tablets of Triphala before going to bed will help purification.
Genitrac helps flush out ama from the genito-urinary tract. It targets the genito-urinary channels to help eliminate toxins through the urine.
Elim-Tox and Elim-Tox-O are both effective in removing toxins from the liver, blood, sweat glands and elimination system. For example, Elim-Tox contains Indian Sarsaparilla, Red Sandalwood, Vetiver and Neem Leaf to enhance purification of toxins through the sweat glands and skin. Other herbs support elimination through the urinary tract by balancing lubrication (Shleshaka Kapha) and the downward energy in the body (Apana Vata).
Another group of herbs contained in Elim-Tox, including Psyllium Seed, Rose Petals, Licorice Root, Turpeth Root, Tinospora Cordifolia and Chebulic Myrobalans, support elimination of toxins by lubricating the digestive tract and supporting the process of elimination through urine and stool.
Elim-Tox is faster acting, but if a person has a Pitta imbalance, Elim-Tox-O is safer because it first pacifies the reactivity of Pitta dosha before flushing out the toxins.
Liver balance is good for strengthening liver function, and the liver plays a critical role in filtering impurities. Radiant Skin is good for keeping the skin clear -- it enhances digestion and helps keep the blood pure.
Spring is Ideal for Cleansing
Many people feel the signs of ama build-up in spring more than at other times of year, because the toxins that are already in the body start to display their symptoms then. The reason is that if you don't follow the proper seasonal diet and routine during the first two months of winter (November and December), the body can accumulate more toxins then. The channels become clogged, and at the same time because of the cold temperatures, ama gets stuck or "frozen" in the walls of the channels.
At this point there will not be as many symptoms of ama. But during the second two months of winter, January and February, there is a slight warming effect, because the sun is starting to gain in strength and is moving toward its zenith in June, even though it's still cold out. By the time spring comes and it really is warmer outside, the frozen ama starts to melt, and as it flows into the body's channels, the channels become flooded with toxins.
Because these toxins are naturally melting in spring, it's the best time to detoxify. The body is already in the mode of eliminating toxins, so it's a good time to support the body in that role.
To detoxify in the spring, The Council of Ayurveda Physicians recommends that for two months, you take Elim-Tox or Elim-Tox-O, take Triphala or Herbal Cleanse, drink plenty of the Detoxification Tea mentioned earlier, follow the ama -reducing diet, and follow the ama -reducing ayurvedic routine mentioned earlier.
Keeping your body cleansed and free of toxins is a matter of following the ayurvedic diet and routine suitable for your body type and imbalances throughout the year, and following an ama -reducing diet daily routine in spring or any time that your feel a toxic build-up. In this way you can take care of these three areas of the body -- strengthening the digestion, cleansing the liver, and cleansing the bowel. If you do this, over time you will find that less and less toxins build up in your body, and you will enjoy the energy, clarity and lightness of a toxin-free body, mind and emotions.
